Most cancers are caused by poor nutrition: 5 foods to avoid

In 2018, the National Cancer Institute estimated that 382,000 new cases of cancer in France and the number of deaths from cancer to 157,400. Record figures never reached before. Scientists are discovering more and more a correlation between diet and cancer. It is therefore important to pay attention to our plate. In this sense, here are 5 foods to avoid in order to prevent the risk of cancer.

Several studies speak of it, one estimates at 30 to 40% of the cancers that one would qualify as avoidable thanks to a change of way of life. Thus, more physical exercise and better nutrition could reduce the risk of cancer. Nevertheless the concept of a good diet remains rather vague and it is quite easy to be confused before the multitude of products which is presented to us in our stores. Here are 5 foods to avoid in order to prevent the risk of cancer.

1. Refined sugars, sugary drinks
According to an article in the journal businessinsider, excessive consumption of sugar not only could cause diabetes, but also increase the risk of cancer. Research suggests that high consumption of added sugar or sugary drinks (ie soft drinks, industrial juices, energy drinks ...) would increase the risk of developing cancer. The effects of overconsumption of sugar would not stop there. Sugar could encourage the development of tumors. According to scientists, cancer cells will multiply faster thanks to sugar.

Remember that the World Health Organization recommends a maximum consumption of 25 g of sugar per day.

2. Alcoholic beverages
According to the National Cancer Institute in the United States, regular consumption of alcohol could lead to higher risks of cancer. Thus there would be a proven link for the following cancers: liver, esophagus, neck, colon and breast. The World Health Organization also confirms this correlation. This risk would be increased when alcohol consumption is coupled with smoking.

3. Salt, products that have been salted
Too much salt intake could cause stomach cancer. Indeed, our colleagues at Le Figaro report that according to the World Cancer Research Fund UK, an English cancer prevention organization, 1 out of 7 stomach cancer would be preventable with a moderate consumption of salt in the United Kingdom. Results that could be interesting considering the 9000 new annual cases of stomach cancer in France. The average salt consumption in France is 8.5g per day per person. Remember that the World Health Organization advises not to consume more than 5 g of salt per day.

In addition, it is recommended to reduce the consumption of meat and fish that have been salted because they are too salty.

4. Processed or processed foods
According to a French study, treated products could increase the risk of cancer. Thus a 10% increase of these products in a diet would increase the risk of cancer by 10% in an individual. These products include all products that have been processed, such as crisp packets, frozen meals, instant noodles, packaged pastries and other confectionery. According to the same study, these foods constitute 25 to 50% of the calories consumed in Western countries.

5. Grilled meat
Any food cooked at high temperatures could be carcinogenic. Because two molecules formed during this type of cooking: PAHs as well as HCA. These are not only carcinogenic when ingested but also when inhaled. However, Professor David Khayat, chief of the oncology department at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, nuances these statements and declares in Le Figaro that we must not "demonize this method of cooking". The risk of exposure can be significantly limited if the advice of the National Agency for Food Safety, the Environment and Labor is followed. Here are his recommendations:

- Keep food away from flames. Avoid direct contact at all costs.

- Favor white meats and fish compared to red meat.

- Do not hesitate to marinate your meats, it will protect them from embers.

- Remove the fat ends before cooking

- Vary the products and do not hesitate to eat vegetables in accompaniment.

Obviously, it is a question of moderating the consumption of these foods instead of avoiding them at all costs. Choose organic foods in addition to a healthy and balanced diet.
